ok, so i found out what going on here finally. there was a movie in the seventies right after star wars, called 'battle beyond the stars'. in the show they needed a little robot bear thing and didn't have the time or ability to make one work. so the effects dude just found a monkey strapped him into a suit and vola! you have a very believable robot bear at only the cost of having the change it's diapers once an hour and have peta chase you down with shotguns. so there you have it. not sure if truth is more fascinating than fiction, but i couldn't resist.
