the universality of this tale holding up and being retold is something astonishing. it seems the idea of some great force swallowing us whole and being placed in a state of a dark prison is common to all men. it is to this one.
One kind of interesting thing these sculptures reminded me of is that it probably wasn't like the whale's belly in Pinnochio - he might not have had much room in there. So sick. It really adds poignancy to what you're saying, too, Chuck.

I love the confused and comicly guilty "Buddha Jonah". He looks like he should be saying, "Wha-happened?"
